If you're in the market for a new car, then you've probably noticed how expensive they've become. While it's nice to think about features and options, you also have to consider affordability. Before you pay too much for your next car, why not test-drive a few of these money-saving strategies?

1. Paying in Cash

When buying cars, it's very common for people to use borrowed money. The problem is that when you make payments for 72 months, you end up paying the bank far more than your car is worth. One way to avoid paying a lot of money in interest is to pay in cash. Paying cash for cars not only saves you money in the long run, it allows you to spend your paycheck on housing, food and other necessities. If you can't afford to pay for your car in cash, then making a big down payment helps, too.

2. Improving Your Credit Rating

Another way to lower the amount of interest you have to pay is by improving your credit rating. Having a higher credit score will give you a lower interest rate, and this will help to keep you from crying all the way to the bank.

3. Going to Scratch and Dent Sales

A great way to lower your monthly car payment is by purchasing a vehicle that has scratches or dents. Going to scratch and dent sales can save you thousands of dollars on a new car or allow you to purchase more options, and either way, you're getting a good deal.

4. Haggling

One of the best ways to save money when buying a car is through good old-fashioned haggling. If you tell a salesperson you're leaving, then they'll sometimes ask you what they can do to get your business. If they don't lower their price, then you can always use your existing car as a trade-in. Most car dealerships pay cash for junk cars so don't worry if your car is a little worn out. It'll do.
