Black Friday Shopping: How to Win

DateNovember 22, 2011 by AuthorGuest Author CategorySaving Money TagBlack Friday TagDeals TagShopping

This is a guest post by Lisa Haan. You can also write a post about getting good deals.

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year, where shoppers find stellar deals on all the hottest gifts. It’s a great day to start (and finish) your holiday shopping, or make any purchases you’re in need of, especially electronics. Black Friday is also notoriously difficult. There are huge crowds of people to contend with, and often they’re all vying for the same things you are. There are infinite lines, and shelves empty quickly. Forget about finding a parking space. And if you hope to get anything, you’ll have to get up really, really early. Is all the craziness of Black Friday worth it to save some money? Lots of people think so. If you’re going shopping on Black Friday his year, here are some tips to plan your trip for an efficient and less stressful day.

Find the Best Deals

You’re going to want to be very prepared before you do any shopping on Black Friday. It is not the day to just browse or be looking for nothing in particular. In the week before the big day, do your research. Read circulars and visit store websites to find out what is going to be on sale. Utilize websites like BlackFriday.info and FatWallet.com to help you find all the deals.

Compare Prices at Different Stores

When you’re doing your research, don’t just assume that the price you see is the best one out there. Look for the product you want at many different stores, and see who is selling it for less. Also, check online to make sure you’re not missing out on savings from discounted websites.

Read the Fine Print

Don’t do your ad scanning too quickly. Read the fine print so you completely understand your purchase. Many times, the price advertised is “after rebate.” If something you want to purchase has a mail-in-rebate, you have to be aware of it and take the necessary steps to get it. Also, be specific about the make and model numbers of electronics you want to purchase. Similar items may have different prices.

Make a Gift List

Create a master Black Friday shopping list. Name every person you need to buy a gift for and what you plan on buying them. Don’t just buy something because it’s a good deal if you have no use for it or no one to give it to. List the items you will buy, the price you expect to pay, and where you will get it. You will refer back to it often, so keep it handy.

Map Your Route

After you’ve figured out everything you hope to get, plan your day but deciding where you will shop first, next and last. You’ll want to try to visit all the places in one area at one time so you don’t have to backtrack. If there are items that are particularly important for you to buy, plan to go to those stores first so they are (hopefully) not sold out before you get there. Also, you might want to find out where the items you’re looking for will be located in the store, so you go down the right aisles off the bat. But take note that during sales many stores move their products around, or put the big deals in prominent displays outside of their regular positions.

Be Prepared for Mayhem

Be prepared for any scenarios you might encounter. What will you do if something you want to buy is sold out? Prepare for the day by getting as much rest as possible the night before, wearing comfortable shoes, and making sure you have a good breakfast. You might want to bring some snacks and water with you to keep up stamina on a long day of shopping.
